A Good Day at Home, Getting into the Season

Paisley, On

On Thursday, Nov 12th Bill was driving the distance to work, at Murray’s, on his own. Billy was away from home and heading to work from a different location. Because of that, he didn’t have to leave quite as early so lingered upstairs a little longer. I was awake so even though he was ready to go, he lay on the bed and we chatted. Mostly about the weather and the changes that are afoot.

Two things greeted me first thing on my walk
the pigeons coo-cooing from the old hotel port hole

the Cenataph and all of the veteran's wreaths from yesterday's
distanced ceremony

After he left at 6:40, I waited until closer to 7:15 before going down fully dressed for my walk. It was cold at 1C/34F and there was definite frost on the windshield but I bundled for it. There was no wind. The only things that get cold, because I’m so bundled, is my nose and my ears. Toques are great, but I hate them. I hate the way they fit and the way they don’t stay in one place on my head. Maybe my hair is too fine to hold them in place but I don’t wear them.

I started down along the Saugeen on Water Street

A closer look revealed a cool setting

I’ve been searching for ear muffs, the knitted kind and/or the old style ones with the fleecy muffs and adjustable wire head band. Trust me, I’ve tried them all. Is my head that much bigger than everyone else’s? They either don’t reach my ears or reach just enough to keep pulling back off my lobes, leaving them full game for Jack Frost. LOL

The sun rises peeking through the trees

I don’t know if you remember but last winter, while south, after learning how to crochet (again), I made winter things. Slippers, a neck wrap and a head band thingy from the leftover wool. I will get those out, we remembered to bring that stuff that was stashed away under our bed hoping never to have to use – much or for very long. Good thing we kept them though, eh? I don’t want to delve into that stash too soon as I know this weather is just the tip of the iceberg.

There are a lot of huge trees in this neighbourhood
I'm sure many are as old as the town - 160+

It was a wonderful 2-mile walk and I was quite warm by the time I returned. I’d resorted to putting the hood up on my light hoody. That worked for today. When I returned, Wes, Susan and Edward (Eddie) were in the garage but soon the boys left for work. Wes has started the wood stove in the corner again after it having a reprieve for the warm days we’ve had. I made my tea and since it was only 8 and I was hungry, took a bowl with a handful of Shreddies, half a banana with cream upstairs.

There are a few prime residential locations, if ever .........

What did I do next? Oh yes, I played online, checking on Kijiji and other websites for about an hour. Donna nor Cathy had played their WordScraper games yet so that was a no-go. Since Nov. 11th was in the past, I got down a few Christmas decorations for our room and just outside our door in the hall. We are going to put our little 4’ tree out there in front of the windowed door but not until December. It’s too soon for a tree, in our opinion. Susan will be decorating the rest of the house soon too and it will be beautiful, I’m sure!

I still love the towers

Heading home the way I came, back up Water Street

Which brings me up to a view of Wes and Susan's garage and house
and the ladder he is forbidden to climb!

Then, I dug out my few sewing accessories. I’d claimed a black lightweight sweater from the Mat the other day. Once a Lost and Found item sits for more than 2 visits, if it fits me or is in really good condition for a donation bag, I wash it and bring it home. I have had many successful finds and yesterday was no exception. This sweater fit perfectly and was probably left on purpose because it needed the side seams stitched in a few spots.

A nice soft sweater for this winter will come in handy

I took care of these booboos

After stitching those up, I put the stuff away and got our 2 boxes of Christmas cards out. Time to concentrate on those before it gets too late. Almost the middle of November! Before starting them, I got our floor dusting mop out and did a thorough job of the hardwood floors in here and then my duster to do baseboards (big old-fashioned ones) and furniture. The floors gleam when the light and sunshine come in the window.

This is the hall just outside our door (to the right)
and our tree will sit on the heater in front of the door

I finished my coffee and it was 11:30 before I knew it. No lunch was necessary so I set to work on the cards. Usually, we are in a much warmer place when I’m writing these but I’ll try not to think about that! Later, Bill reminded me that we usually write them while at Pilot Knob RV Resort, Winterhaven, CA. LOL When I hear that friends in upper Nevada have snow, I feel a teensy bit better. Sorry, Kay’s! ๐Ÿ˜Š Don’t worry, ours is a-comin’!

Once I finished writing and addressing the cards, I walked to the post office and bought Christmas stamps. No need to mail them for a while but I’m glad to have them done as a couple need letters to go in them. I carried on from the p.o. and walked on streets I’d yet been on and it just never gets old. “Who is that lady walking around with a camera and a piece of paper?” Ha ha, I’m sure there is chatter in this little ville.

Clemmy's little area, ready for Christmas

There was no mail and Susan told me when I returned that she took a walk earlier to get out of the house. ๐Ÿ˜Š It was cool but wonderfully sunny so I don’t blame her one bit. She'd put mail in our packet for us. I’m still getting mail notices for Mom from her bank, and will as long as her account is active. I also got a condolence letter from Veteran’s Affairs which was nice. Back at the house, I was quite hot as I’d overdressed, I guess. That’s not a complaint, I’d rather be warm than cold.

On my afternoon walk, I crossed this bridge and looked over at the bridge
that I would return on
Funny, I had 3 bridges in view at the same time!

I made a coffee and came upstairs with a couple of pieces of cheddar cheese to nibble on. I did some reading then went down to mix up a couple of things. Bill requested whipped cream for our peach crumble so I made a batch of that and then decided to blend together a recipe for a chocolate pudding using the leftover raspberries I had in the fridge. We’ll see how that tastes another night and see how Bill likes it with whipped cream.

It was a nice surprise when after finishing the dishes at 2, Bill texted that he was on his way home. Woohoo! Always good to hear when he gets off early. There may be another delay on the bunky as they wait for more materials. No telling where he’ll be tomorrow, Friday. I watched for him and unlocked the garage door, saving him the trouble. Today, he had an earlier snooze and I stretched out on the bed to read while he dozed.

Waiting in the front room for Bill

Susan's Christmas cactus is beautiful in bloom

This is where I miss our recliners but the bed works ‘almost’ as well! Wes and Susan went out around 4 or so but didn’t say where they were headed. They aren't required to let us know but it seemed a bit odd when they didn't say. At 5:30, we went down to start supper. Tonight, it was little sausages fried with fried leftover potatoes and corn. Yes, dessert was peach crumble with whipped cream. Yum!

a simple but tasty supper

By the time we were doing dishes, our landlords came home with Chinese food for supper. ๐Ÿ˜Š Of course! I’d forgotten it is Thursday night and they seem to have a tradition. Traditions are nice. Upstairs, I focused on my blog post and Bill did some online surfing. This was a good day, I managed to get almost 5 miles/7.62 km walked around town. I gathered a couple more historical pictures but you have to wait – again.

Topped off with a tasty dessert and keto too!
No guilt here.

Good night y'all!

I hope your day was a good one. Thank you for stopping around!

  3. Glad you are still getting some decent weather. And I'm more than impressed that you're pretty much finished your Christmas cards. I'm about to start decorating - though my tree will go up. This year, some traditions are going to be different.

    Take care, stay well!
