This is More Like it! Sunshine and Gardening

The Ridge

On our holiday Monday, related to Queen Victoria’s birthday, I was slightly amazed to see blue sky out of my bedroom window. It wasn’t across the whole sky though, as I came downstairs around 7:45 (yes, I slept in) I noticed that it was cloudy over the Suite and to the east.

Good morning!

Bill was determined to take his cargo trailer and go to the flying field to meet his friends and there was no stopping him – well, unless it rained. No forecast of precipitation today though, just mostly sun. Yay! 😊 He left and although it was still very cold (he was layered up), I made plans in my head for the day too.

The temperature was only 4C/39F and it took all day, even under sunny skies, to reach 9C/48F because of a cool wind all day. I hung inside with Gibbs after Bill left, had my tea, showered, played my online games and I started a new book. The one from the other day? Stupid, stupid, don’t waste your time. I got into about chapter 3 and was still ‘whaa???’

I jumped right into the garden work
once the birds were fed.
I moved the hosta into the spot where the R of S was,
top pix, and planted it in the small garden in the
east corner of the berm.
Still so many rocks!!

This one is a winner, David Baldacci called The 6:20 man and I’m already hooked, 40 pages in. 😊 At 11ish, we went outside. I had to get my down-filled winter jacket out of the hall closet because with a hoody and windbreaker, it just wasn’t enough. Brrr. I brought the box with my vegetable plants out of the Bunky so they could get the sun’s benefit and then filled the bird feeders.

At 1 pm, I thought my hunger
was the reason for dragging.
These tortillas are the best as
quesadillas. No guilt either!

Next on my agenda was to do some weeding and to move the Rose of Sharon to a better location. Since our second year here, she has not flowered and then it was not a very big show. Maybe because there is shade up there on the hill, it wasn’t getting enough sun. There are a few new leaf buds but that is normal.

A walk down the lane with my little
shadow. He's so much better this year
so far.

It took everything I had and then some, phew!, digging that sucker out and then digging the new hole in the old garden plot up on the berm. So many rocks and roots from long gone trees had me huffing and puffing again. It is planted and I can only hope she is happier there. In a couple of years, I should know.

I finished off by weeding around the onions and clearly marking the area for when Bill is weed trimming. He doesn’t recognize garden fare as easily as I do. 😊 I hauled 5 pails of dirt from the pile, and moved a Hosta, that was getting swallowed by Primrose, into that spot. With a pail of rain water, thank you God, I was able to water both new plantings.

Trimming is next. Up on the berm
my Trilliums stand out against the bright green
WEEDS and long grass!
The bottom picture is after I finished cutting
my lawn until the battery died again, LOL.

I was done for a while so moved my chair into the sheltered sunny side of the Suite. Facing south was the way to go this afternoon and it was quite pleasant with my hoody and windbreaker this time. I read a bit and even closed my eyes for a bit. There were NO (non, nada, nil, zero, zilch) black flies to bother me the whole time……..well, except one who’s life was extinguished.

Bill cutting the front field.
Wow, what an improvement!
In a week, it was getting so long.

Bill returned from his fun day with the boys around 3 and Gibbs ran down to greet him when he was parked with his cargo trailer. When he’d grabbed a sandwich, he hadn’t even eaten!, he went out to cut the grassy fields. Gibbs and I walked down and watched, sitting from a sunny perch on the cedar rail fence.

Gibbs and I were surprisingly
comfortable sitting on the rail fence.
Bill is getting sneaky, taking pictures
from the mower. πŸ’–

For supper, I reheated the ham, the glaze, cooked potatoes for Bill and corn for both of us. When I walked over to weed my 2 original rhubarb patches, I was blown away with the crop I had! Since last week, it has grown like crazy!

The rain has certainly helped OR…….I believe my Buddy (Angel) Rob has popped in and given them a boost. He has always encouraged me with the rhubarb plants and then always suggested a pie with any results. Oh, I do miss him but am surely grateful for his help!

Pat said Rob would  be very proud of me!

I decided to use the 2 cups from the plots along with strawberries and make a crisp for dessert. Ooh, it was delicious! I didn’t even go keto (I just euchered my weight loss that I saw on the scales earlier) but it was worth it. After supper, the sky was still clear blue but we knew it could be an overnight frost so weren’t fooled. I brought the plants back into the She-Shed/Bunky for hopefully the last night.

I didn’t sleep well last night for some reason, even though I was up until 11 watching the finale of American Idol. Our choice didn’t win but I won’t spoil it for any of you who have it recorded and not yet seen it. I’m not too bummed, these last contestants will still go very far in the music business.

Strawberry rhubarb crisp.
Yummy

Nothing special on tonight so I may be in bed early. I saw every half and full hour on the clock until 2:30 so I was certainly not in a hurry to get up today. I need my 8 hours! After the work outside today, I’ll be sure to drop off fairly quickly when my head hits the pillow. A few stretches should help as a preventative from soreness in the morning.

It was a good supper.

This was a wonderful day! My spirits were indeed lifted with the appearance of that big ball of Vitamin D. I hope you enjoyed your Monday too. We should be about 12 degrees warmer tomorrow so that will be nice.

Thank you for popping around!

    1. I wish Canada had more keto products. I'll watch for the buns though when we're in the states again.
      thank you Shirley!

  3. My mom used to make rhubarb pie all the time. No one else cared for it so she ate it all. Strawberries probably would have made it much better!! LOL. I have to admit, it's pretty fun working in the garden.

    1. Mom did too BUT we all loved it and ate it all up in one sitting. Such a lot of work for one meal! There were 8 of us so I guess that explains it!

  4. Sadly the weather seems to move west to east, so we're not seeing the sun....maybe later this week.
Yum, rhubarb-strawberry crisp! One of my favorites for certain. I remember learning once, the difference between a crumble, a crisp and a Brown Betty, but for the moment, I don't recall what it was. Enjoy!

    1. That's funny about the differences in those desserts. I come to think they are all the same thing! :)
