Summer is Definitely Here Again! Apples for the Picking

The Ridge

On Thursday, Aug. 15th we woke up to a pleasant morning of 15C/60F. Bill and Gibbs were up at 6:30 and I didn’t move until 7. Seems to be my sweet spot when I’m cleaning or even if I’m not. 😊 Billy called at 8 asking Bill if he wanted to work today. The answer was yes. It will at least be a few hours pay this week.

Good morning!
Last night's sunset from the window

He finished getting ready and I made his pb and cheese sandwich for him. He left just after 8:30. My day was pretty much free. No cleaning, no runs to town for M, just a favour for Robin this morning. I had my tea, played my games and drove down the road to her home. Even though she is in Newfoundland, (or wherever she may be) she still manages to sell items from her Market Shed. 😊 What a gal!

Two Moonflowers today from 2 newer plants

I almost missed them.
Ignore the weeds, if you can.

I moved a 2-drawer file cabinet from one garage out to the driveway and 2 other items (a cat tunnel and a riding toy) to the side porch for pick up by buyers. In th’e morning, I’ll stop to retrieve the cash from her ‘spot’ and drop it inside for her. That was it!

This is Robin's fruitful apple tree
They are nice yellow/golden apples
but when they drop, they bruise easily.
See the pile at the trunk?

They might be Crispin? Not Golden delicious.

Before I left her place, I raked a few apples that had dropped on their lawn and then picked enough for a freezer bag or pie or crisp. She had gathered 7 pails already.

I returned home and Gibbs and I sat outside together for a while before I decided it was time to do a bit of sun-tanning before it got too hot. The forecast was hot hot hot. Gibbs found shade and I read my book in the sun for an hour – until lunch time. It was a toasted pb and cucumber sandwich which finished off the ends of the sour dough bread loaf. I’ll put the new loaf I bought in the freezer so it lasts like this one did. 😊

5 waiting in the wings

Bill texted at 1:30 that he was on his way home and pulled in just a few minutes later. We sat together for awhile and then parted ways. He dozed and I read more. This book is also hot hot hot! Until time to eat, Bill went to the Hangar. We had an Amazon delivery, by ALS, surprising me again with the quick service.

I think the grass felt good on his tummy

Yes, I took your picture.
Dogs definitely have attitudes! 💖

For supper, we shared a large air-fried chicken breast. I reheated my onion rings and cooked squash for me and corn and little potatoes for Bill. It was quite good and we finished the cheesecake with strawberry sauce for dessert.

Can you see him in the shade over there?

It has been a warm day, reaching 28C/82F with mostly clear skies. There was a slight breeze so that kept it pleasant. Gibbs needed his teeth cleaned so he sat really well, while I did the best I could. He likes to chew on the rubber finger. Goof! Today, I noticed why he might be scratching his belly so much. It looks like a rash on his belly so we'll take him to the vet tomorrow afternoon. This has been a lovely day, nice and easy going.

Delicious!
Good night!

Thank you for the visit!

A ‘What to Do?’ Day, Sister Drops In, Dark Skies, Apple Dessert!

On The Ridge
Bill and I were in no rush to get up this cloudy Friday, Sept. 6th morning. So, we stayed cuddled under the covers until 7:30. After years of getting up at 5:30 for work, it sure feels nice to be in control of our wakening and rising hours. Isn’t retirement great? Some of you are early birds and we are still, compared to many, but the choice is wonderful.

Today's morning sky
The air in the Suite was 59F and outside it was 54F. Not much difference but with our duvet and no heater on last night, we slept perfectly! Well, I did. Bill never sleeps perfectly through a night.  I think he slept 'fairly' well though. We had our coffee and tea together and I went on Facebook instead of reading blogs. Seldom do I get on FB so wanted to do a catchup and play my Scrabble games with my sisters.

And the sky worsened as the day went on
Bill left at 9ish to go to Durham H.H. for some paint to finish off the carrier and for some touchups on the cargo trailer hitch. On the way back, he stopped at the Acreage for a bladder fill of well water. I couldn’t get warm inside but didn’t want to turn the furnace on again. It’s too early to get into that habit! So, I put socks on and leggings and my hoody and sat down again to start today’s post. As I got ready to type the part about Bill leaving, I remembered that he was going to take our RO water bottle.

But it looked so pretty with the sun and green landscape
I quickly checked the ‘basement’ and it was still there so I called him. He was only half way to Durham so decided to come back and get it. We're not completely out yet and have sufficient small bottles of water for me to drink but his intention was to get it filled. Once he left, I gathered 4 of the small bottles to bring them inside. May as well use them up. I should have stayed put. As I’m closing the door to the Suite, it slammed on my ring finger. Holy crap that hurt!

So, I've got a booboo now
It hit just along the left and bottom edge of my fingernail and cut my finger a bit. “Darn, darn, darn”, I squawked (well, it was more like damn, damn, damn) but you get the picture. I ran cold water on it to slow the bleeding and donned my Dr. Patsy hat while I applied Ozonol and a couple of Band-Aids plus medical tape to hold them in place. The pain eased substantially. Such a small thing, how can it hurt so much? Wimp.

First, I opened up the heel area
All I could think is “I’m gonna lose that nail”. I know that is extreme and quite ‘Drama Queenish’ as it will probably only turn black and grow out in 6 months but I was freaking out, okay? One good thing though. Back inside, I had warmed up considerably and was no longer dwelling on being chilly. To keep my mind occupied, I wanted to repair (redo) my bulky slippers that I made in the spring.

Then I tore out about 3 rows from the back
I have two pair, one made with regular wool and they are for the in-between days. In between cool and cooler mornings. This morning I put on my bulky ones for the in-between cooler and cold mornings but they have stretched and are now very sloppy on my feet. I have learned that ripping crochet stitches out is a breeze so I knew I could do that and tighten them up at the heel. Easy peasey and it was done in 10 minutes. Now they fit better and my feet are warmer still.

And they fit my feet much nicer again
Typing with my left hand is a bit more of a challenge and I will make sure to proofread before publishing. That finger is bigger now and wants to hit 2 letters at a time. Just after 10 the light spattering of rain was hitting the roof and south windows. The forecast was calling for 55% chance of precipitation and usually that doesn’t mean a wash out. We may see some sun today for a bit but for the time being we needed to plug back into electric for a while.

I had a bullet proof coffee with breakfast
When Bill texted that he was finished at the Acreage, I started cooking breakfast. We had some peameal and eggs today. I remembered to take a package out of the freezer yesterday when I made room for the apples. Good thing Bill washes the dishes, my hand won’t be going in any water today. We cleaned the dishes up and I sprayed clear enamel on one side of my 2 rocks and put them in the Bunky to dry.

I’m expecting a visit from my oldest sister, Cathy, around the noon hour. She has a dentist appointment in Durham after 1 and wanted to visit Mom while she was in town. That leaves her about an hour and a half to kill in this quiet town. She is from Teeswater so an hour from home and since we’re only 10 minutes out, she’ll come and get her pottery and have a coffee with me. Cathy arrived at 12:20 and we came inside the Suite to visit. She’d just finished a coffee before going in to see Mom so didn’t need one after all.

Cathy arrived after lunch
I showed her her pottery and gave her a pair of nice pants that I was going to be taking to the exchange. Since Cathy wouldn’t be there, I was pretty sure they would fit her and sure she would like them. We chatted about a few things and I was happy to hear that she had a nice visit with Mom. She didn’t go into detail and sometimes I like that. We often get caught up on the ‘Mom visits’ and nothing else gets discussed. This was time for us. She’d just picked up an Instant Pot at Canadian Tire for $80 so was excited to get familiar with it.

While Cathy and I were chatting in the Suite
this lovely falcon perched on our fence post

He chased something into the grass but came up empty - beaked
After she left, around 1:10, I put together a recipe I’d found on line for Apple Crumble. First, I saw it in our local Spotlight magazine. I pulled a 4-cup bag of apples out of the freezer and searched for a recipe in the Instant Pot. Bingo! Check out the ‘start to finish’ times on both the mag recipe and the one I’m using. This explains one aspect of why I love Madame IP. The cook time is 8 minutes in the IP and a natural release of 5 minutes.

And my pretty co-ordinated sister
She takes after Mom
Instead of cooking mine directly in the big pot, I used my inner pot and I’m anxious to see how it turns out. The rest of the afternoon, Bill and I kept each other company inside the Suite. With a blanket over my knees and a wee whisper of a prayer (teehee) Bill made us each a nice creamy tea. All I had to do was ask but it was worth my pretend prayer to get his chuckle. 😊  My tea was so good and even better when it is made for me.

I found this recipe in the Spotlight
Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

My recipe

Setting up the timer
Bill was heavy into his Stuart Woods book; The Prince of Beverly Hills and I was getting lost in my One Shot by Lee Child. Enter one of my favourite characters, Jack Reacher. At 5, I removed the Apple Crumble (which looked yummy) from the inner pot and cleaned it for the next round. I then put the ingredients together for my meatloaf and set the inner pot in Madame IP.  With 8 minutes left on the 25-minute timer, I added some small potatoes that need to be eaten up. Everything turned out great and we were eating by 6:30.

And I removed the crumble into a bowl so I could
use the inner pot for the meatloaf
The meatloaf was perfect and so were the little spuds. For dessert we tasted the Apple Crumble and it was another success. Bill washed and I dried the dishes as per usual and then I walked quickly down the lane to check the mail box. Not sure if she stopped today or not. The walk wasn’t so quick, but leisurely instead. There has been little to no wind all day which made it very pleasing to go down. The air felt dampish/misty so the envelope I brought back felt wet.

Delicious!
Bill turned the fireplace on low just to take the chill out and that certainly helped, bringing the indoor temperature from 65 up to 69F. Much nicer for sitting around, which is what we did today. The sky hasn’t changed all day and now the clouds are just darkening as evening falls. This has been a quiet day but a good one.

It was dark enough for the motion sensor lights to come on when i walked by

And this has been the look of the day
Good night everyone and Happy 50th Anniversary Rob and Pat!

Thank you for stopping in today.

Finishing a Job, Applesauce, Flight Times – Maybe and Clouds

On Wednesday, Sept. 6th I was up and out the door by 7:20 am. The day was looking glorious and even though it was only 8C I didn’t want to miss a minute of the morning. I headed out in sunshine and I wasn’t too far down North Line when the ribbon of clouds covered the rising sun. I walk alone along Baptist Church Road as far as the turbine that we call ‘our turbine’. It is the closest one to our place on The Ridge.
the sun rising just before my walk
There was no wind and it made for a lovely walk. When I got back along the lane I snapped a couple of photos of this thistle flower. Two of the same plant with two different shades of purple.
It is like the Mother and the daughter, you decide which one is the brightest. Anyway, they are both pretty.
I didn’t see any turtles this morning, no wild life of any kind but a couple of geese did fly overhead to our pond.
And to the west it looks promising
When I was walking, 3 buses passed me, 2 long and 1 short. Sounds like a telephone ring from the 1960’s. Our phone number on the farm was exactly that on our party line. Do you remember those? I came back and Bill and Clemson were still in bed. Once I made my tea the door to upstairs opened and they both joined me. We read posts and chit chatted about our day’s plans.

Bill went to get water and I had work still waiting for me down at the end of the lane. I needed to clean up from the garden ‘purging’ I was doing so set about that. I worked away for about an hour when I could hear the grader coming down our road. I stopped for a break and captured the driver looking my way when he got to our drive. He is just in time, we were starting to notice a few pot holes.
Once
Bill returned after the second pass through and continued up the lane to fill our fresh water tank. I will be good now for the days that he is away in London. The grader went by 6 more times after that and when he finished the road looked great. When I had the weeds and grass from yesterday’s digging tossed over the fence, I decided to dig up my irises around the Private Property sign.
Second pass
As the grader went by for the last time, I had just finished removing the irises and loading them into the wheelbarrow. I had also discovered 4 or 5 scrap metal pieces in the dirt. You never know what you’ll find when you dig. I pushed the barrow up the lane, up the hill and put my tools and equipment away. I’m not sure where to plant the irises but will figure it out before we leave.
Bill returns from getting water
I’ve decided it was too much of a pain trying to keep the grass and weeds from growing up around them down at the post. In the spring, I will plant some annuals there instead. It will look nice and hopefully will fill the space better. When I went inside Bill and Clemson were settled in the recliner. Bill was studying and Clemson was sleeping on his lap.
Those are big tire treads
I made an omelette for our breakfast around 10:30 and made sure there was enough left for Bill to take tomorrow. I hopped in the shower and after relaxing a bit we drove to Hanover to see Donna and Gerry. They are considering a trip in late November/early December to see us in Arizona. We have put the bug in their ear a few times before but no one can be pushed or coerced into something like that.

After the 3rd pass and still 3 more to go
With Gerry’s surgery, he is very much at Donna’s mercy for many/most everyday things and he'd like to do something nice for her. He has wanted to take her golfing for her birthday since July so this will be a very cool vacation for both of them once he is fully active again. We are only offering advice with flights and suggesting areas to meet up with us. We’d love to have them but time will tell if it works out.

With the irises dug up

See how the grass grows in and around the base?
We left their place a few minutes before 5 because Clemson was being a nuisance.
What me a nuisance? Nah, impossible
They invited us for supper but going unprepared for our pooch’s meal plus the fact that Bill has some things to get ready for tomorrow had us declining ‘with thanks’.  For obvious reasons, I felt whooped and thought that I would sit and try and read for a bit before we had our own supper.
My tool caddy - so to speak
I found myself drawn to my laptop instead, realizing that I hadn’t started today’s post yet. I usually get a start on it right after reading other’s posts but today I neglected to do that. I don’t like letting it go too long because I forget what I did and that leads to a very boring, dull posting.

Bill lit the barbecue at 6 and grilled the burgers and bacon strips. There would be one or two left over for his supper Thursday night. I also put the remaining rhubarb crisp into a container for him to take. He doesn’t often get dessert so I hope he remembers to eat it. He brought our Coolatron into the Suite and plugged it in, now he can load it up tonight.

Our supper was good, we have what we call Loaded Burgers with all the fixin’s. Bacon, cheese, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato for me, onion and dill pickle. With a toasted bun we couldn’t have a better burger. Dishes were cleaned up right away before we got lazy and I typed some more while Bill made his lunches. It seems like a long time that he has been home and I’ve loved every minute. I never enjoy seeing him leave for a 2 day stretch but it always turns out just fine.

Cloud overload.........hope you enjoy these as much as I do

I took one more walk down the laneway because my Fitbit was asking me to complete my 4 miles for today. I don’t argue with it, sometimes I ignore it but this time I walked. The sky all day has been performing some pretty amazing jumbles with clouds, sun and more clouds. We missed the rain that seemed to have fallen while we were in Hanover. I’ll try and capture the sunset before signing off tonight.

I finally finished one of the things I was going to cook, using my apples. I decided on apple sauce and even though it is a small batch, a very tasty batch I might add, at least I didn’t waste the apples. Tomorrow, when I am alone I will make some kind of creation out of the tomatoes that will just go bad otherwise. I have a couple of ideas.

That was a great brisk walk, emphasis on brisk. I was in capris and a light jacket so I walked very fast. The clouds make me smile, they are so outrageous! Oh and there is Drake swimming authoritatively in the pond, all by himself. With a loud honk as I came into view, I simple snapped a picture and kept on walking.
Can you see him across the pond?
It has been a nice day here with the things we got into. I hope you can say the same.
Goodnight from the Ridge
