The Wilsons Have Left the Ridge, Summer Again

The Ridge

It was a clear sky on Tuesday, Sept. 3^rd when we got up. I could have slept longer, I think, snuggled in there under our warm duvet. I pulled it out from under the bed last night and was grateful for it. It was a lovely sleep. So, at 7, Bill was almost ready for work and it didn’t take me long. We both left the Suite at 7:20. The Mat had one customer when I walked in and she was in and out transferring her comforters to the dryers.

I was done in an hour and went to fill our water jug before heading for home. Our company weren’t out yet, it was only 8:45 when I pulled in. 😊 I finished my tea, played some of my games before it was time to go and pick M up for his run into Durham. I popped over to say goodbye to Ken and Kim before I pulled out at 9:50. It has been great having our company, we didn’t think we’d be seeing them until the winter in the sunny south. Their visit was a lovely surprise and always good times.

When I returned at 10:30, they were finishing with the hookup process so I got one more hug from Kim before they left. The air felt cool this morning but with a full sunny sky, it was going to be a pleasant day. By then, it was coffee time so I made it and went outside to sit in my gravity chair. Today, I sat with my back to the sun so I could finish my online games and read my book. I got a fair bit of rays yesterday.

I had a wedding gift to wrap so I took care of that and then crossed it off my list. Yes, I need a list so I don’t forget to do things before the weekend. With the week shorter than usual, it wouldn’t surprise me to think I still had an extra day! 😊 I finished my book over lunch while I ate my tortilla pizza. It was good but I didn’t have any cheddar left to add to the top. We’re going shopping tonight when Bill gets home.

Gibbs was outside with me for quite a while until he ran out of shade on the steps. He wanted in and I went to the Bunky to start my next puzzle. I picked it up on the weekend so wanted to get at it. I have a few now to work on. This is 1000 pieces and fills the whole table. Before I came in for a cup of tea, I finished the border and some of the inside picture. It is going to be fun.

When Bill got home around 4:45, he relaxed for about 15 minutes and then we drove to Guelph, 95 km from here, to Costco. We were running out of things and also wanted to add more of our ‘winter stockup’ items to the cupboards. We left around 5:30 and didn’t get home until almost 9:30. It is ridiculous that it is already dark now by 9. Our summer is slipping away. We did get a lot of items, 95% of what was on our list and not much else. 😉

Gibbs was happy to see us and happier that there is cheddar cheese in the house again. ♥ I worked on my blog and Bill made his sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch before we called it a night. 

We followed the pink sky homeward.

I finished my book today so earlier today had to bring more in from the Bunky for my winter reading. We had a lovely day, reaching a nice high of 20C/72 under sunny skies. That means it felt much warmer to me.

I had taken pictures of the hooks I bought for my clothes hangers but seem to have deleted them. I'lll take more tomorrow and include them in Wednesday's blog. It will help explain what I was talking about.

Summer is Definitely Here Again! Apples for the Picking

The Ridge

On Thursday, Aug. 15^th we woke up to a pleasant morning of 15C/60F. Bill and Gibbs were up at 6:30 and I didn’t move until 7. Seems to be my sweet spot when I’m cleaning or even if I’m not. 😊 Billy called at 8 asking Bill if he wanted to work today. The answer was yes. It will at least be a few hours pay this week.

He finished getting ready and I made his pb and cheese sandwich for him. He left just after 8:30. My day was pretty much free. No cleaning, no runs to town for M, just a favour for Robin this morning. I had my tea, played my games and drove down the road to her home. Even though she is in Newfoundland, (or wherever she may be) she still manages to sell items from her Market Shed. 😊 What a gal!

I moved a 2-drawer file cabinet from one garage out to the driveway and 2 other items (a cat tunnel and a riding toy) to the side porch for pick up by buyers. In th’e morning, I’ll stop to retrieve the cash from her ‘spot’ and drop it inside for her. That was it!

Before I left her place, I raked a few apples that had dropped on their lawn and then picked enough for a freezer bag or pie or crisp. She had gathered 7 pails already. 

I returned home and Gibbs and I sat outside together for a while before I decided it was time to do a bit of sun-tanning before it got too hot. The forecast was hot hot hot. Gibbs found shade and I read my book in the sun for an hour – until lunch time. It was a toasted pb and cucumber sandwich which finished off the ends of the sour dough bread loaf. I’ll put the new loaf I bought in the freezer so it lasts like this one did. 😊

Bill texted at 1:30 that he was on his way home and pulled in just a few minutes later. We sat together for awhile and then parted ways. He dozed and I read more. This book is also hot hot hot! Until time to eat, Bill went to the Hangar. We had an Amazon delivery, by ALS, surprising me again with the quick service.

For supper, we shared a large air-fried chicken breast. I reheated my onion rings and cooked squash for me and corn and little potatoes for Bill. It was quite good and we finished the cheesecake with strawberry sauce for dessert.

It has been a warm day, reaching 28C/82F with mostly clear skies. There was a slight breeze so that kept it pleasant. Gibbs needed his teeth cleaned so he sat really well, while I did the best I could. He likes to chew on the rubber finger. Goof! Today, I noticed why he might be scratching his belly so much. It looks like a rash on his belly so we'll take him to the vet tomorrow afternoon. This has been a lovely day, nice and easy going.

Summer Returns, Black Beauty Update

On Wednesday, Sept. 20^th the day started as usual on a work day for both of us. Bill was up and after a goodbye kiss, left at 6:30 with Ptooties. I was up and left after making a to-go mug of tea to clean the Mat. No one appeared for the whole hour so that made it pretty quick.

It is so different when we return in the spring. 

Yesterday, I had a chat with Sandy about our departure date and my last working day. He made it clear that they wanted me back in the spring which is always encouraging, since I enjoy it. I will set up a time with his office clerk, Allison, to take her through the process again as well as show her how to clean the big dryer lint trays. She filled in for me a couple of times but would like a run-through. I don’t mind at all! 😊

Today, I noticed a huge change.
I don't have many pictures today so share the
drive with me. 

Gibbs and I went out for a brief run around before I had to make my thermos of coffee. I drove BB over to M’s and first thing we did was hop in his old Ford to go down the country road to get wood pallets from Alex. M cuts them up and burns them over the winter in his wood stoves.

better than 2. We worked on the car a bit
and then went out to offload. He usually does it
himself but today I offered to help.
That is the old trailer I've been cleaning out. 

Next was a run into town with only 2 stops and then back to the shop to work on the Datsun. I discovered that it looks like it is an ’82, which makes more sense.

just to extend the process, I guess. 😀

Each day we work on it, we’re that much closer to completion. While I sand, he works on the holes and rusty spots that need that kind of attention. I was home by 1:10 and have a day off tomorrow from both jobs.

I got washed up, changed and made my lunch. Simple today with toasted marble rye bread and honey. Then we went for our walk to get the mail. No special collar and that little guy walked either behind me or beside me. ♥

As I reached the gate, he stopped while I kept walking to the mailbox at the road. He sat and waited without me saying a word so he, of course, received a great deal of praise. If only we could teach him to avoid a couple of other annoying habits. 😊 LOL We sat outside on my new chair and I dozed and read on this lovely day! We reached a nice temperature of 21C/71F today at the peak, now this feels like summer again! Yay!

There was frost on our windshields this morning, heavy enough to make us wait our departures, but that should be it for a little while. My vegetables can stay out tonight. When Bill got home around 3:30, he’d had a call from CarStar saying we could bring the truck in to have the alignment done and oil pan replaced. That meant an oil change too. They didn’t have all of her parts yet but this was, at least, a start. 😊

We sat together for a while before I started supper. I should have started it earlier as the chicken thighs took ‘forever!’, you’d think I’d learn. The bonus was, even though we weren’t eating until just after 7, that the skin was so crispy and delicious! We had mac & cheese with our vegetable and the meal was very good. Bill made his lunch after clean up and I worked on this.

We’ve had a good day. We are feeling positive about things but only time will tell how it plays out. I hope you’ve enjoyed the same warm day we have.

Summer Returns, Food Shopping, Another Long Day for Bill

The Ridge

On Thursday, Aug. 31^st I remembered that I had to go to clean the Mat but I wasn’t in a rush. It was 6:30 when we saw Bill off in Black Beauty, the truck was needed today, and it was 7:20 when I made my mug of tea to-go and left for town. I knew Gibbs would be alone all morning since I would be carrying on for our groceries in Hanover.

It was a busy morning so my first
picture is of my lunch at 1:30.
It was delicious!

The Mat was pretty decent but there was a customer that needed some assistance a couple of times. The coin machine was making change for bills but not from loonies or twonies so she needed quarters for the dryers. I arrived just on time for her. With my routine thrown off, I was backtracking a bit and needed to empty the lint on the 3 big dryers. That is usually worth the effort as I seem to always find a ‘tip’ in there. Today, it was $2.60. 😊

A story and a lesson.
In Montreal, we discussed how the yellow jackets/bees
are pests at the hummer feeder. Audrey sent a link
on how to get rid of them.
On the right, I followed instructions and wrapped some of
my mint stalks around the feeding area. See the bees?
Later in the afternoon, the main picture shows no bees
and although Mr. Hummingbird isn't here, he 
frequented it all afternoon. 💗

I drove to Independent first, got the few things there that were on sale, then to Walmart for the bulk of our items, back to Dollarama searching for a cheaper price on almonds and then back in Durham, Foodland’s sale items finished off my shopping list. I don’t mind shopping but it is still tiring, searching for the right aisles for the right items. By the time I got home and unloaded Ptooties ‘full to the brim’ trunk, it was 12:15.

Gibbs watched as I found spaces for everything, the freezer is definitely full now! Then, I had some seeded rye bread toasted with sauteed tomatoes and zucchini. Oh my, that was good! I wish I’d thought to buy some feta cheese, that would have topped it off nicely. Today is such a beautiful day, the polar opposite of yesterday’s joke, so Gibbs and I went out to soak up some sun. He stayed in the shade mostly and I dozed in my gravity chair.  😊

it is a good story.

Once cooked, heh heh, we went for a walk around 4:30 and it was then that Bill called to say they’d be late – again. Even later, methinks, once he told me what they had to do before getting home.

Gibbs is tired out and while I sit to read my book, he stretches his little body across the cool floor. He’s too busy keeping watch when he's outside to really rest. It was 6:20 when I came inside for my tea and it was 7:15 when Bill drove up the lane. Loooonnnggg day = good $$.

I decided on toasted westerns for supper and they turned out to be just right. We finished the last 2 pieces of pie off and I did the dishes while Bill made his lunch and did the banking from today’s purchases. He records everything in Quicken. I could have done it, but didn’t today. This was a good day, our larder is full again and so is our fridge and freezer. That’s always a good feeling. We reached a high temp of 21C/71F and it was gorgeous!

A Short Week Begins, Still Summer Here!

On Tuesday, Sept. 6^th I didn’t hear Bill get up to take Gibbs out nor did I hear him get up for work. I was in the midst of a strange dream; one I was happy to wake up from. It was 7 when I finally got up, just in time to say goodbye to Bill. Black Beauty was going back in to a shop in Hanover to get the alignment checked so Bill took her again today and Billy picked him up on the way to their job site. I didn’t have to clean so as soon as Bill left, I hopped in the shower. Our short work week has begun.

A nice day for a walk

Gibbs and I went for a walk once my hair was dry and I could tell that it was going to warm up nicely. It was around 13C/56F but there was a clear blue sky and a beautiful sun to change those numbers. I had cereal with half a peach before making my coffee-to-go in my thermos. I drove around the corner to M’s shop for 9:30. I did a bit of taping and then sanding on an interior door for M’s own apartment this time.

We’ve got the front rental all fixed up, he wanted to do something for himself. 😉 I worked outside and soon felt the heat of that sun as it moved around to the southwest of his building. Back home, Gibbs was a quiet little greeter with no collar and so I let him outside to run around freely. He didn’t go far and we played chase the ‘toy’ (that’s what we call it) together for a while and then just relaxed in the sun and shade while I read my book.

Bill called about the results of the truck and now there is something else that is in question. LOL, all things regarding safe driving need to be addressed but when it is something we’ve never heard of, we need to follow up with caution. I also had a call from Kaitlyn (the Mat) and we caught up on things regarding machine repairs etc. For now, a weekly update with each other is a good thing.

When Bill was on his way home, he called for me to pick him up at Grey Bruce Fleet Services. He’d picked B.B. up and we were leaving it with Kate for them to check it over tomorrow. Gibbs and I met him there and we all drove home together after getting our 5-gallon water jug filled. It was almost 5:30 when we returned so he and Gibbs dozed and I was able to finish my book quietly beside them. ♥

Such a good book! I enjoyed it a lot and have now added 4 more with the same character to my ‘Want to Read’ section on Goodreads. I just have to get my hands on the books. 😊 Supper was grilled sausages in a bun with ice cream for dessert. Mine was in a cone and we just had enough to give us each a taste. I’ll have to pick up more when it goes on sale.

We washed the thermoses and Bill made his lunch. BTW, Gibbs has still got funny eating habits but is at least eating one really good meal a day, sometimes two. My program was on at 8 so I worked on my blog while watching it. This has been a nice day, warming up to 21C/70F. Summer hasn’t left us yet! ♥
