An Oatman Kind of Day

Park Place RV Park

On Tuesday, Jan. 28th we were up between 6:20 and 6:45. Bill and Gibbs first and then Gibbs and I next. The little bum gets Daddy up and then comes back to bed. 😊 Bill had his shower and I got washed and dressed before having our cereal. At 7:30, I took Gibbs for a walk and he chose to just do the ‘inside the park’ route at that time.

Good morning, Off to Oatman we go!

Bill, Patty, Duncan and I were in the truck at 8 am. Nancy was going to keep an eye on Gibbs for us today as we were headed to Oatman, the Burro village that we all love. It was a 2 ½ hour drive, with one stop in Lake Havasu City for a break before arriving at our destination around 10:45.

Route 66 - these views are amazing.
You can see for miles and miles
Lots of Teddy Bear Cholla on this route

We didn’t see any burros along the drive from Lake Havasu City, however, Oatman was not a disappointment, within an hour and a half we toured shops, fed and pet 12 burros and witness a gunfight!

We were so happy that the burros were hungry
enough to visit the western town.

We all got our burro fix today

So pretty.
Mama-to-be on the right.
Her baby was moving quite a bit in that belly. 💗

The burros are our favourite attraction there as they are so adorable and calm. One very pregnant mama followed a couple of her companions around and accepted as many pets as we could give. She wasn’t too hungry, didn’t eat from our hands as the others did, but I did see her eating later on from the local stores. That baby looks due any day!

This is Oatman

We carried on to Kingman but first we made a stop in Cool Springs at Sitgreaves Pass. This Pass is a section of Route 66 in the Black Mountains of Mohave Cty, Arizona. It is at an elevation of 3,586’, steep, narrow, and curvy and considered one of the most dangerous parts of the road. Bill drove it expertly, as did Black Beauty, and as passengers we kept the ‘eeks’ to a minimum. 😊

This is a Captain America motorcycle.

How good a shot are you?
This Sheriff was pretty good and got
the banks gold back with one (or two) shots.

During the day, I took the time to check in on Gibbs via our Wyze security cameras. If he wasn’t sleeping on the bed, he was up on the back of my recliner. I wasn’t worried, Nancy would take good care of him and sent me a couple of her own pictures. We followed Route 66 through to Kingman, Az where we found Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner for a late lunch. It was 1:30.

Bottom right: These Saguaro inards are beautiful!
I would love one at the Ridge.

Passengers can look around but the driver is not allowed!!
The 2-lane highway was narrow with switchbacks.
Black Beauty and our driver was a pro.

A stop at Cool Springs, out in the middle of nowhere.
This beautiful kitty wanted attention so I gave her a tummy rub.

We were all in agreement that a bacon cheeseburger was our choice and only I differed with my side dish. Instead of fries, I opted for onion rings. Yum. The homemade root beer came in a refillable mug and it was absolutely delicious! When Duncan and Patty stepped up and took the bills, paying for our meals, we were very grateful. It wasn’t necessary but a great gesture.

From there, we went down to Bullhead City which is a long city from north to south. Traffic was busy enough at 3:30 but we carried on through to Needles and came back home through California until we caught off to Parker. We’ve not taken that route before but not going back through Lake Havasu City saved us about 20 minutes. The view is lovely, the ‘rocky’ mountains are sure picture worthy. 😊

Love the record design menu and the
guitar shaped serving trays.
The food was great and there are 2
pretty trucks in this picture. (not looking at the white one either)

We pulled in to the site at 5:45 and Gibbs was excited. He wasn’t home alone much and when he was, he slept and kept guard. Nancy walked with him 3 or 4 times, or should I say ran with him? 😊 She loves our nuisance too and visa versa. We couldn’t thank her enough so we picked up a sweet piece of fudge (is there any other kind?) that I took over to her later.

A different route home through California
Still lovely views and saving time

After that big meal at 2:00, we sure didn’t need supper. Bill and I sat and watched a bit of news and then an episode of the new series Doc. Second one in and we are still liking it, so that’s good. My sister told me of another series that they watched so I caught the 1st episode of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Prime Video last night as well. Hmmm, I’ll see which way it plays but it seems interesting.

I checked in on Gibbs at home a few times.
He was quite content in between Nancy visits. 💕

I was way too tired for blog writing so that is why the delay. Plus, way too many pictures that I need to sort through. Around 8, we had some cheese, crackers and I had a bit of my soup. That was just enough. 😊 It was an awesome day, we really enjoyed showing our friends this quaint little cowboy town. It turned out to be warmer than expected, Bill and I took our coats off early on, even though only 54F/11C.

He will miss his friend when she leves.
These are pictures Nancy took during the day.
Thanks again, Nancy, for looking after our baby.

Good night!

Thank you for joining us for our Oatman day! (warmer weather is on the way! Yay!)

  3. I love visiting those burros. They are a kick in the pants. The natives take very good care of them. As for Gibbs ... you're lucky I didn't sneak him into the van when I left. He is such love bug!! Next time you go by Parker, look for EARP ... down a dirt road. It's where Wyatt Earp lived the last few years of his life prospecting.
