The Ridge
I was up
out of bed at 7 on Friday, May 8th. My turn for a shower. I’m glad
we have the little electric heater in the bathroom as that is one place in
particular that I like to feel warm, stepping in AND out of the stall. Bill got
up as well and made the bed before going downstairs for his coffee. I soon
joined him but sitting at the table with my laptop, my feet felt so cold. I
should have stayed over in my recliner now that the cool weather has returned.
This was last night's sunset |
Bill and
I played a few hands of our online Scrabble game together and it reminded me
that before I woke up, I was dreaming. The dream made me smile but sad at the same
time as our dear friend, Mark, who we lost last April was across the lunchroom
table at our former workplace asking me if I wanted to play a game of Scrabble.
What a special memory. Mark and I used to do daily crosswords together. He was
a wonderful friend.
also last night, Bill noticed that they were spraying the fields behind us Getting ready to plant |
Since it
was a frigid day of only 1C/33F for today’s high (what the??) Bill said it
would be a good day to fix the brackets for our pantry cupboards. His job, his
posting. I’m sure he’ll write about it at On Our Way. My job,
while he went out to collect his tools, was to empty the cupboards, so I did
that. I made myself a tea and that's when I looked out the back window. My heart raced to my
throat as I saw a visitor in our pond. One I’ve never seen before.
I started emptying the shelves You can see the old brackets in place but they don't last forever |
Food from the top two shelves |
Dishes from the bottom |
It was worth running out in my slippers to get pictures |
I like this picture because it shows the size of the swan in comparison to the geese |
The girth as she/he swam towards me is huge! |
Of course I'm going to take a lot of pictures I may never get the chance again |
When Bill finished, he cleaned up the mess and I put what I could back into the
cupboard to clear the stove top. We had bacon, eggs and toast and after dishes,
I put the rest of the food stuff away. It never hurts to go through that
practice from time to time. The dishes get rearranged and I get to take stock
of what canned and boxed goods we have. Good to know! Yesterday, I did the same
in the freezer so it will help plan meals.
They didn't mind each other's company |
The top number you see is the wind speed - mph The bottom on the right is the outdoor temperature - Fahrenheit This was the high at 3:30 pm |
a gift for Mom She will love the stuffed bunny The flowers are silk and we think she'll enjoy them too Donna put a picture of all of Mom's kids with names in with the card |
I followed these stately geese up the lane but no babies here See their size? Now remember the swan in comparison. |
That
cleaned up the leftovers as well as the last of my squash from the fridge. The picture is almost identical to last night's supper so I didn't include it. As I’m writing this,
it isn’t determined whether we need dessert tonight. Need or want. There is a
bit of apple crisp and there is ice cream if we want it.
A small white patch of snow behind the tent |
And over by the Bunky |
Looking across the road, you can see the poor visibility |
Back and forth, sun, clouds, wind and snow |
What a gorgeous swan, you got some great photos of it.
ReplyDeleteWe are supposed to get snow tonight. It is going to be a miserable weekend.
God bless.
Thank you Jackie. Isn't he beautiful?
DeleteWe got dumped on with 3" of fresh white stuff. It is clean, that is all I can say about it. LOL
Great pictures of the swan, he sure is big!
ReplyDeletethank you! He was fun to watch for sure.
DeleteNice pictures of the swan. Strange for some reason I thought they were always in pairs.
ReplyDeleteSnow in May is just not right. We saw pictures from home today and everything was covered in white. Take care.
thank you. Bill said the same thing about them being in pairs. Maybe he is checking out a new spot to bring his sweetheart, like Bill did. hahaha
DeleteWe are in a blizzard this morning. LOL Will it ever end?
Hey you were so excited about that swan you didn't check on the robins nest. Nesting birds do it like this. They lay about an egg a day so it takes some time to get them together. But so they all hatch about the same time they do not sit on them and warm them up until they have them all so they all hatch at the same time. Eggs need heat to start their development. My chicken eggs take about 21 days to hatch and quail take about 16 I think so that bird should need about the same as the quail. So if it didn't get killed it will continue to lay eggs in the nest until it gets enough to hatch them. So it might of been just out feeding. Once they start the hatching they only leave the nest for a short time to poop and water and get a little feed, but have to come back soon to keep the eggs warm and developing. So check on the nest and see if she's still at it. Just thought you'd like to know. :O)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I was very excited about the swan! Unfortunately, the robins nest is up the road about a mile and I didn't get out for my walk yesterday. It was tooooo cold. Today we are covered in a blanket of 3" of snow so I won't be there today either. This is all very interesting, Bob, and I appreciate the explanation. I feel better that she hasn't likely abandoned it. :) Thank you!! I will definitely check next time I walk.
DeleteThe swan photos are lovely! I'm surprised there wasn't a second one because I believe, like geese, they tend to mate for life. Perhaps this is a solo looking for love. :p
ReplyDeleteYikes, snow in May! Hopefully the warm weather arrives soon.
He must be searching which may mean he lost a mate. :( I just hope he returns, he was a joy to watch.
DeleteHow exciting to have a swan on your pond. I hope it does have a mate and they return together. They are such graceful creatures.
ReplyDeleteDean had to do the same thing in our cabinet not long ago. I don't think it will be a problem again.
Oh my, 3" of snow!! Im thankful we only had 44F overnight and not the 34F they predicted and no snow. I pray your weather improves very soon. I'm shivering just thinking about it!!
It has certainly been a different year.
I noticed you have a goldfinch. We haven't seen any! My sister has several, so I keep hoping!!
Im sorry you can't be with your mom for Mother's Day. I'm sure she will enjoy her basket though.
Thank you Cheri for the lovely comment. The snow is unwelcome but the swan can come back anytime.
DeleteWe've had a lot of goldfinches this spring, more than ever the first two summers up here.
I'm sure Mom will like the gift, just too bad we can't see her for a hug. :)
Wow a swan. How lucky are YOU!!! He or she was gorgeous and huge!! I'm hoping this is the last cold hurrah and you'll be headed into spring. Your mother's day present is beautiful. I'm sure she will love it. Happy Mother's Day to you!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Nancy. We are so lucky to see a swan here. Hoping he comes back soon!
DeleteYes, the snow has overstayed its welcome, we are so done with it!
Thanks for the wishes. And Happy Mother's Day to you too, your 4 pawed children and your 2 legged son will enjoy spending the day with you. :)
Wow! Great to see the swan!
ReplyDeleteYay! So exciting!
