It Seems to be Our Turn, Feeling the Heat

Yuma Lakes RV Resort

So, continuing from last night, things went awry here in the Suite. Around 6:30 when we were finishing supper, the power flicked off and on. This happened a couple of times and Bill thought that we’d blown a breaker since not all things came back on.

Just a short walk this morning

With some investigation, after hearing a noise I can’t describe and smelling burnt wires?, we discovered that the big power bar we have up in the cupboard for our stereo components was kaput. That’s what popped and where the smell came from. Thank goodness for small mercies, the power bar protected our units. 😊 However, it seems that it is our turn to have the bad juju land on us. Things were too good, I guess.

Thank goodness for this surge protector
power bar
It's too bright in the fridge to get a pix of the control box
that has no lights

The fridge light is on but the compressor unit at the top that shows you the temperature, isn’t lit up. That means our fridge isn’t running. Oh crap! Does this sound familiar Lori and Roland? Bill searched to no avail as to the cause of the problem. The fridge is a no-go, the microwave works. The tv, fireplace and stereo units work. The surge (or whatever it was) blew our Keurig, it’s toast and maybe the toaster yet the outlet still works.

All GFI outlets don’t work but all 12v lights and outlets do. We had our a/c turned on but it wasn’t running at the time and both units are working. The GFI switch will not reset and stay on. Bill had the park maintenance guy come and check the electric at our post and he has tested and retested everything that has been suggested. We can’t get into the back of our huge residential fridge easily (right, Ken W.?) so we’re just going to baby it until we get home.

I sat out with Gibbs and saw this lady
Can you see her?

That was last night. This morning, Friday, Apr. 8th, nothing had changed although until we know where and what circuits have failed, we are nervous to plug into power. We are staying on battery/inverter power for the day. I didn’t feel great first thing but a couple of Tums took care of my upset tummy quickly. Could be nerves, maybe? It was a short walk for Gibbs and I, Mom wasn’t up to par. He understood and enjoyed the round the block jaunt all the same.

We needed to be proactive and learn from our friends who’ve recently lost their fridge. In Yuma, we picked up a large cooler when we couldn’t find any cheapo Styrofoam ones in the right size. They were all perfect in size for keeping a 12 pack of beer cold but nothing bigger. This cooler will hold the freezer items, the dairy, other necessary items plus ice bags.

I transferred the cubes of ice we made up to yesterday into large ziplock bags so we don’t have a watery mess when they melt. The park sells bags of ice and in town we can get dry ice if we decide to go that route. On the way back from Yuma, we stopped at a couple of rv dealers to see what their service bays are like and were told they were looking at Apr. 15th and May 16th before they could look at it. Not good. We have to be back in Canada by April 20th.

Bill called a mobile guy that RV World recommended and he can’t come until Monday, late morning or early afternoon. We’re not overly confident in this action but will pay for a service call and see what we can learn. We’ve extended our stay until Tuesday at minimum. We notified my sister and her husband who we’d planned to begin travelling with Sunday morning. They have an earlier deadline for home crossing so encouraged them to go on ahead if they need to.

Simple supper cooked outside

I’m spoiled more than ever after using the a/c in the Suite over these hot day and Gibbs is finding it hard to get comfortable. Poor little guy. After lunch, I went to the pool. Bill hasn't yet shown an interest in taking the 'plunge'. haha. It’s where I feel the most relief and I spent almost the whole 2 hours in the water. My fingers showed that I’d been in too long! 😉 By the time I walked back, I was warmed up all over again. LOL

It's not a great picture but there's my boys up ahead of me
on their walk 💓

For supper, Bill cooked Italian meatballs and brown beans on the Weber. We both agreed on simple food tonight that didn’t have to be heated or cooked indoors. After doing the dishes by hand, Bill took Gibbs for a walk and I slipped up to the pool for another swim. It was Bill’s suggestion and a way for me to cool down. 😊 He’s good to me! First a dip in the pool, then because it was warm, a dip in the hot tub which was hot and then a last swim around the pool. Aaah, just right. I felt like Goldilocks!♥

I had the pool and hot tub to myself
but I wasn't staying more than a few minutes

The clubhouse is right beside the pool

This hasn’t been one of our better days but we know from our friends’ experiences, that it could be much worse. We’ll still count our blessings and move forward. The temperature today reached 99F/37C. Tomorrow will be the same so we're turning the a/c back on and hope everything works well.

Walking back home, this view needed to be
captured on 'film'.
Good night!

Thank you for your visit.

  2. Sorry to read about your not so much "fun" with fridge. We have been there. Fingers crossed the guy coming on Monday is able to help.

  4. OH NOOOOO!!! Just an FYI ... I have a surge protector on my rig, a Progressive EMS system. It shows error messages when the power goes out, telling you why. Even though the campground electrician said there was no problem, there WAS. I moved to another site and everything worked just fine. Maybe you could ask to be moved, just to be sure.

I'm so sorry to hear this ... good grief!! You spent all that time in Quartzsite and everything was good. Sending prayers that the guy can get it fixed on Monday. In the meantime, I'm with you ... I'd just stay in the pool!! Do you have a small fan to set up inside? I have a 12 volt I use and it makes a big difference.

    Sending hugs!!!

    1. Yup, our turn. No, we don't have a surge protector and Bill isn't sold on them. We've heard good and bad stories but it's too late for the fridge and our GFI switch is toast now. No one else had a problem here so it makes us think it is IN the rig where something happened. :( Thank you, Nancy, we'll just put up with the heat and yes, stay in the pool or the a/c at the clubhouse. Problem is that Gibbs can't go either place.

I think we used to have a 12V fan but not any more. We're blessed to have our solar and inverter at least for using minimal appliances if we want and that will help us especially for our travel.

  5. Hi Bill and Patsy. We just returned home from our southern stay and have the same problem in our 2010 Mobile Suite, it fried both sat receiver's ,Fridge, bedroom tv, gfci breaker, convection oven and three surge guards . after replacing the gfci and checking things, I've found what I think was the problem?? If the power cord reel is at a certain extended point, it looses power on one leg. I've extended it and now have power on both legs so I suspect this caused the surge?? Im now awaiting for the yard to dry up so we can take it in for repair's . Best of luck with your unit and I will be watching for your updates. Travel Safe and may our paths cross some day. Mike and Jane

    1. Oh my! Did you have to replace all those things? The fridge, oven, tv etc? Do you fulltime in your rv? Thank you for your comment. It would be great to cross paths with you!
      Thank you!

  6. Best wishes that on Monday the repairman can get things fixed. Thank goodness for the pool! Elva

  7. Well that's crappy, I hope things work out for you. Given the temperatures down there I think I would be tempted to head to cooler climates and look along the way for a service center. Well actually if that was us I know hubby would be packing up and heading for home to get it fixed, but we can get home a lot quicker than you guys can.

    1. Bill came close to doing just that but other than the cooler temps, we'd have a hard time finding someone to service it anywhere in a short time. This guy was recommended so we'll give it a shot in the dark.😉
It'll take us 7 days to get to the border, crossing on the 9th.

  8. Sorry to hear you're having troubles. Hope it gets fixed quickly. Too hot to be without AC.

    1. Thanks Doug. Soon, we'll be out of the extra hot weather so we're more concerned with the fridge and our food, long term.

  9. Patsy....I am speechless. So sorry for the experience you are dealing with. At least we had some dear friends that were great in assisting us when we needed it the most. Did our food bring in the bad luck to your fridge. :( . I have a sick feeling we are still about 2 months away from having a fridge. I hope it is quick and easy for you. We are finally having the rv looked at on the 27th. Hang in there...it has to get better. Or so I tell myself

    1. Ah, thank you, no your food didn't bring the bad juju. :)
You are my strength, when Bill felt beaten up yesterday, that's what I reminded him of. You guys dealt with a lot more than this so we need to be positive too and forge on.
Sorry about the delay in your fridge repair/replacement. We may have to pick up a small freezer back home to add to our Bunky fridge if we have delays. It absolutely HAS to get better for both of us! ♥

  10. Oh dear, that does not sound like fun. Hopefully the service guy can give you an idea of what needs to be done. Good luck with your travel home.

  11. Chances are there was a Power Surge that affected your electrical system.
This is our Third Fifth Wheel that I installed a Progressive Industries Electrical Management System. On several occasions RVs around us were loosing electrical and electronic devices our's were protected. Progressive Industries guarantees their unit will protect you.
Hope you get your Fridge up and running.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. Thanks Rick. This wasn't a surge in the park. It is something within the Suite. At least this time! We'll look into a surge protector this summer.

    2. An Electrical Management System is far more then a Surge Protector. If you are plugged where the Frequency, Amperage and Voltage are too High or Too Low it can do as much damage to your rig as a powerful Power Surge. All those can damage your electrical devices. Our's has saved us quite a few times.
There are those you plug into the Pole then you plug your Power-Cord into that or you get the one you Hardwire into your system. (That's what we have.)

  12. That is too bad that you are having these issues and I feel sorry for you. It is a bummer! It will be interesting to find out what caused this problem. We had a power surge once at our travel trailer and our converter got busted and we had to replace it. We then bought from Amazon a portable Southwire Surge Guard that plugs into the post of the campground. It also has a rain cover that protects our RV electrical plug.

    1. Thanks Marlene. We can't blame the park for this one. 🥺
Well look into a surge protector this summer so may be asking Benno and your opinion.

  13. Cute header picture! I am so sorry it's your turn! Dog gone it! Hopefully the mobile guy will be able to figure it out and it'll be something simple. Until then enjoy that pool! It looks so inviting! I hate living out of an ice chest! Ohh too bad Gibbs can't go either place :(

    1. Thanks Shirley. We hope he comes through for us regarding electrical. We won't be using it on the way home anyway but it would be nice to have it fixed. It will be ice in the fridge and freezer for the rest of the journey.

  14. So sorry to hear of your problems! Hope you can get it sorted or limp back home to Can-am.

  15. We have a Progressive Power Surge too. A few years ago we bought a Surge Guard. It was the portable one. We were at Jekyll Island and this was the first time we used it. The power went out and the washer had been running. Smoke was coming out of the cabinet it is in. We didn't know to run but We got the unit opened and it had burnt up the mother board. Gee that was fun!
We sent it back to the company and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Won't buy and of their stuff anymore. They did refund us after a discussion. You have to be tough to RV but love it anyway. Best wishes for good result.

  16. We too have had our share of RV park power issues, but after burning out a nice microwave do to low voltage in the parl, we purchased a Progressive Dynamics EMSPT50X, now discontinued I believe. After 4 years, it has saved us numerous times, as it protects the whole coach at the power pedestal. It is not destroyed after surges, bad park wire etc. It has an LCD screen that tell you what the issue is. I believe Southwire compamy now make a similar unit (34951). We plug it in to the pedestal before we ever settle in, the lcd screen verifies that all is good, then hook up and unpack for our stay. A little pricy, around 400 dollars, but woth it. Good luck
